DarkSunn - Old Man Dark
The new album by DarkSunn, a producer with a career spanning almost 20 years, is a composition about the art of growing old in music, beats and hip-hop. For this journey, he brings along some of the companions he's made along the way: DJ Madruga, J-K, João Pestana, Mlk Mau Aluno and Vasco Completo.
DarkSunn, producer, co-founder of Monster Jinx, DJ and host of a program/podcast about beats. He's been making music for almost 20 years, but this is only his second album. After the ode to the city he was born and raised in, on the album Almada Velha, the producer ventured into beat tapes, releasing 'Cromatica' and 'Beats for Plants Vol 1'. Now he's returning to LPs to pay homage to the art of growing old to the rhythm of beats.
Redundancies aside, Old Man Dark emanates maturity. A maturity that comes from years of making beats but also from his presence in various collectives, events and communities.
'Tell the Story', the lead single from the album released in April 2024, announced what was coming. There's a story to tell and DarkSunn is going to write it in tracks full of detail, so that no detail escapes. There's more to come and this Old Man doesn't plan on leaving the scene any time soon, because evolution has no expiration date.
'Would you look at me now?', is heard in a dusty voice in 'Tinto da Casa'. Aging like wine, we say, about those who don't look for the highest peak to plant a flag on, but find their way in search of the best version of themselves, day after day, year after year. In a musical genre that still looks at ageing with embarrassment, DarkSunn's statement becomes particularly relevant. This OG celebrates the passing of time with the chalice held high.
And what better way to celebrate than surrounded by the friends and collaborators we've met along the way? DJ Maddruga, J-K, João Pestana, Mlk Mau Aluno and Vasco Completo join the table and bring their point of view in the form of rhymes, guitar notes and scratch.
